Custom Shoji Screens & Doors FAQ

Answers to the common questions people ask before choosing Australian made Shoji screens, Japanese sliding doors, room dividers, wardrobe doors, and timber-framed privacy solutions.

Are they made in Australia?

Yes. Shoji Screens & Doors makes screens, doors, and associated joinery in its Brisbane based factory and ships Australia wide. The products are Australian Made certified and include a 10 year warranty for workmanship and construction.

What is the infill panel, and is it Japanese rice paper?

Shoji does not use rice paper in the construction of its screens and doors. Rice paper does not provide the same longevity and can discolour or tear easily. Instead, Shoji uses polycarbonate Japan Rice panels or a choice of translucent acrylics.

What timber do you use in your Shoji screens?

The frames are solid natural timber. Standard options include Tasmanian Oak and New Guinea Rosewood with clear lacquer, white lacquer, or black lacquer finishes. Optional stain colours and colour matching can also be discussed.

Can you make custom doors or are all Shoji doors standard sizes?

Each job is handcrafted to exact specifications for the finished opening. Shoji makes internal doors and room dividers, hinged doors, wall-face sliding doors, cavity sliding doors, bi-fold doors, wardrobe doors, fixed screens, and freestanding bi-fold screens.

Do you install?

Yes. Installation is recommended for local clients because Shoji is qualified and the installation workmanship is covered under warranty. For regional and interstate clients, delivery can be arranged Australia wide from Brisbane, with technical help available by phone.

Do you measure, design, and quote?

Yes. Shoji can first discuss your needs by phone or email and provide an initial estimate quote. If Shoji is installing the screens or doors, a site measure appointment is then included in the price.

Do your Shoji screens provide privacy?

Yes. The translucent acrylic panels create privacy without blocking softened light, making them suitable for flexible living areas, bedrooms, ensuites, offices, and room divisions.

Do you provide hardware such as handles, latches, locks, and tracks?

Yes. Hardware can be supplied to suit the application, including handles, latches, locks, and smooth-running track systems where required.

Do Shoji screens suit decor other than a Japanese screen look?

Yes. Design and finish options can suit modern, contemporary, classic, Asian fusion, coastal, scandi, and japandi interiors, as well as traditional Japanese-inspired spaces.

What do we need to do to get a quote?

Provide an approximate opening size, height by width in millimetres, and an idea of what you want to achieve, such as privacy, a room division, a wardrobe front, or a design feature.

Do you have showrooms?

Yes. Distributors have displays and can assist customers in different locations. The Brisbane display is at The Build & Design Centre, 66 Merivale St, South Brisbane, with free parking and seven day opening except public holidays.

What lead time can we expect from a Shoji order?

Lead time is usually around 4 to 6 weeks at most times of the year. Some exceptions may be arranged depending on the project and timing.

Are Shoji screens suitable for wet areas?

Shoji regularly supplies doors as entry doors to bathrooms and ensuites. The suitability of a specific design should still be discussed for the location and use case.

Are the screens or doors soundproof?

They are not soundproof and should not be treated as sealed acoustic or odour-control walls, but they can reduce or muffle sound between rooms.

Can they be used outdoors?

Outdoor use is not recommended and is not covered under warranty because the screens and doors are not security items or weatherproof exterior doors.

Must Shoji screens have tracks on the floor?

It depends on the door configuration, opening size, flooring type, and what you want to achieve. Many systems can be top hung, while large screens are often best with a floor guide track for stability.
